Submission Guidelines
We do not have any guidelines. We look to publish the best fiction, poetry, and essays that in our estimation we can. Our tastes and interests are best reflected in what we have been recently publishing, and we suggest that you look at some current issues for guidance.
We do accept simultaneous submissions for fiction, but not for poetry. (Please note, however, that we are not currently reading fiction. We have already accepted many good stories for future publication.) We do not have any length restrictions. We require the first serial rights.
We only accept hard copy submissions. Please address your submissions to:

Submitting Manuscripts: The South Dakota Review publishes only previously unpublished poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and scholarly essays on American or western American Literature. We accept submissions year round. Poetry submissions should be 3-5 poems. We do not accept electronic submissions. The cover letter should provide a brief publications history, and should indicate if the manuscript is being simultaneously submitted. Most submissions are returned within eight to ten weeks, and manuscripts are published one to six months after acceptance. Payment for accepted manuscripts are two copies of the issue in which the manuscript appears followed by a one year subscription to the South Dakota Review. SDR acquires first North American serial rights and reprint rights. Sample copies ($8 per back issue) may be obtained from the Circulation Manager upon request.
